I spent one month studying Spanish at the SEPA School in San Isidro. I lived with a Tico family within a five minute walk to the school. The school itself was located on a hill with lovely views of the surrounding mountains. The classrooms were comfortable and cool and well equipped. There was a small kitchen with a fridge, microwave and coffee maker. Coffee, tea and cookies were available.
I worked hard with my two teachers because I wanted to get as much as I could from the lessons. At times it was difficult and I struggled to remember all that I was learning. My teachers were very helpful and had a lot of patience which kept me from becoming discouraged. They were good about tailoring the subject matter to the things that I was interested in such as tropical plants and local culture.
The family that I stayed with was friendly and accommodating. I found it a little strange at first but soon I was made to feel right at home. I went food shopping with my hostess and was able to choose things that I preferred. I don´t eat any meat but it was not a problem because there was an abundance of fresh fruits and vegetables.
I did have a problem at the bank trying to cash a cashiers´ check from my bank in the U.S. I was advised by my bank not to take travelers checks because some places don´t take them. However the Bank of Costa Rica that I dealt with said that travelers´ checks are the best way to carry money.
The directors of the school, Nidia and Wilbure worked with the Bank, talking to the manager, writing letters, making phone calls and emailing my bank in the U.S. It took several weeks to resolve the problem and it was only possible because Wilbure and Nidia allowed me to use their account to deposit the check.
The town where the school is located, San Isidro, is a very safe and friendly place. I walked to town almost every day to visit the library and to shop. Everyone I spoke to was polite and helpful and seemed to appreciate my attempts to speak Spanish. I was able to find anything I needed at a reasonable price. On Thursdays there is a large Farmers´ Market with lots of vendors selling fruits and vegetables plus cafes offering local cuisine.
I would have no reservations recommending San Isidro, the SEPA School and most of all Nidia and Wilbure. They are very capable and professional but even more they are warm and personable and care about their students.
